Important Items

As the Shinigami have been organized for quite some time, items of varying levels of importance have gathered here and there.

  • The Volume: A catalog kept by Jonegami holding the name of every student ever enlisted in the Institute. It also has names of Shinigami that existed before the Institute was founded in the very front, penned by Obigami himself and passed down.
  • The Roster: A book filled with a list of deceased humans by region, kept by No Jonegami. It automatically checks off whether or not the Soul's been sent to Purgatory. Smaller carbon copies of this are kept within the Bureau. With this, Jonegami can issue missions to students and those who come seeking them.
  • Looking Books: These books allow Shikigami to peek into the lives of the living, and the living only - not the deceased and not Shinigami. They are particularly tuned to focus on those with tragic lives.
  • Language Bands: Many people who come to the Institute speak different languages. The Bureau invented this band to default their language to English. Many people wear it discreetly, such as around the ankles. How does it work? (1) If characters speak without thinking about it, their language will automatically be converted. (2) If they think about it, the user can also speak whatever languages s/he already knows -- so the band does not control their mind; it simply influences it. (3) Existing knowledge of English won't be affected. If worn for long enough, the Shinigami will have knowledge of all languages ingrained into his/her being. (How? Via passive magic! Wow. It's all very complex, or so the Bureau would tell you.)
  • Ofuda: Originally talismen from Shinto shrines, the Bureau manufactures these for use by Shinigami against Oni (and, in rare cases, Souls). You can't obtain any without consulting them first. These small strips of cloth or paper can be used to both invoke and ward things like fire, disease, and, when powerful enough, even death. You can see the danger involved in using them.
  • Water Mirror: A convenient item for performing the Water Switch, in which a student gazes into his/her reflection in water for three seconds in order to switch planes. Not as common as you'd think.
